Community History
Cooperstown Borough was incorporated in 1858. An early Venango County historian noted that the first settler was Captain William Cooper around 1796. He built the first flour mill. Cooperstown went by the name of Cooper’s Mills until the Cooperstown post office was established in 1831.
The discovery of oil in 1860 had a notable impact on the region, including Cooperstown. The gristmill built in 1846 operated for a century on Sugarcreek, showcasing the area’s agricultural heritage. Cooperstown holds a significant place in Venango County’s history, contributing to the area’s cultural and economic landscape.
